HYDERABAD: The BJP-led Centre has over the past eight years succeeded to a large extent in controlling terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir, insurgency in the Northeast and Left-wing extremism, Union home minister Amit Shah said on Saturday.
Shah emphasised internal security challenges in the 75th year of Independence, while citing the sacrifice of 36,000 police personnel. Summing up the internal security scenario during Modi’s term as PM, Shah mentioned three regions — J&K, the Northeast and LWE-affected areas — that posed challenges to security agencies. “In J&K, terrorism dipped after abrogation of Article 370, in the Northeast we signed peace deals with many insurgent organisations, resulting in 8,000 of their members joining the mainstream and ushering in a new era of development. Due to effective tackling of left-wing extremism, the number of Maoist-affected zones has dipped from 96 in 2010 to 46 in 2021,” said Shah.
Addressing IPS probationers graduating from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, the home minister said police officers will now face thematic threats, including cyber offences, misinformation wars, financial and narco-terrorism, and fourth-generation information warfare. “You have to face these challenges, kill narco-terror links and protect financial centres. We have to tackle these challenges through multidimensional policing,” the home minister advised probationers.
Shah also termed the ban on PFI as one of the finest examples of synchronised action by security agencies in strengthening democracy. “Central agencies and police from across the country worked jointly to gather conclusive evidence against PFI in a single day. It shows maturity and the power of our democracy. We have zero tolerance towards terrorism and empowerment of security agencies has led to significant reduction in terrorist activities,” said Shah.
The Union minister was the chief guest at the passing-out parade of the 74 Regular Recruit IPS batch from SVPNPA.
