Caste-Based Headcount in Bihar: EBCs and OBCs Constitute 63% of Population, Upper Caste at 10.6%
The Bihar government has recently disclosed statistical data from its caste-based headcount conducted this year. The data showcases a noteworthy demographic makeup, with the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) collectively representing 63% of Bihar’s total population. In contrast, the “upper caste” groups within the Hindu community, traditionally seen as a key support base for the BJP, comprise just 10.6% of the population.
The data shows that the politically sensitive 113-caste group known as the extremely backward classes (EBCs) constitute the largest portion at 36%, along with the other backward classes at 27%, which amounts to 63% of the total 13.07 crore population of the state; together they constitute the social hefty segment of backward classes.
