Voting is underway for by-elections in seven assembly seats in six states. The seats where bypolls are being held today include Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Puthuppally in Kerala, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Dumri in Jharkhand and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura. In all seven seats, votes will be counted on September 8. This is being seen as a litmus test for the opposition’s INDIA bloc that has resolved to contest elections “together as far as possible”.

Tripura Bypolls: Over 40% Turnout Recorded Till 11 am
Amid heavy security, polling for the by-elections in Tripura’s two Assembly constituencies of Boxanagar and Dhanpur is underway with over 40% turnout being recorded in the first four hours of balloting. Police said that there has been no untoward incident in the two segments under the Sepahijala district.
Puthuppally Bypoll: 26.6% Turnout Recorded Till 11 am
Voting for the by-election in the Puthuppally assembly constituency in Kerala’s Kottayam district continued briskly with men, women and youngsters lining up early at booths that opened for polling at 7 am on Tuesday. Within the first four hours of polling, there was a turnout of 26.6 per cent as evidenced by the long queues outside many of the total 182 polling stations in the constituency. Till 11 am, 46,928 voters — 24,682 men and 22,246 women — had cast their votes, the district administration said. There are over 1.76 lakh registered voters in the constituency.
Bageshwar Bypoll: 26% Turnout Recorded Till 11 am
A voters’ turnout of 26% was recorded till 11 am in the bypoll in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar.
Dhupguri Bypoll: 17% Voters’ Turnout Recorded In First 2 Hours
Over 17 per cent voting was recorded in the by-election to Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district in the first two hours of polling, an official said. Polling began, amid tight security, at 7 am across 260 booths in the constituency, and the poll percentage stood at 17.25 till 9 am, he said. “The polling has been peaceful so far. No untoward incident has been reported,” the Election Commission official said. (PTI)
