Forensic experts reached the spot where the bodies of three people were found
Kozhikode City police commissioner Rajpal Meena said the primary information was that a man splashed petrol and set it on fire. Three persons have been taken to a private hospital and five to Kozhikode medical college, he said.
At least three of the injured are women.
One of the injured persons told media that the unidentified assailant splashed an inflammable substance, seemingly petrol or kerosene, and set it on fire. A woman said she felt like water droplets were falling on her face and suddenly the fire spread.
Witnesses said when the train reached Elathur bridge, it stopped, and passengers were seen rushing out of one of the compartments in panic. Railway sources said the incident happened between Elathur railway station and Koyilandy railway station.
The accused is learnt to have escaped after someone pulled the chain to stop the train. A search is on to find the assailant.
