NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said graft was the biggest roadblock to democracy and justice and the Central Bureau of Investigation‘s key responsibility is to free India from corruption.
Addressing the diamond jubilee celebrations of the investigating agency, PM Modi said the CBI has emerged as a brand for truth and justice and had given hope and strength to the common citizen.
PM Modi said the CBI has a huge responsibility in building a developed India.
“India cannot move forward without professional and efficient Institutions like CBI. From bank frauds to wildlife-related frauds, the CBI’s scope of work has increased manifold but the main responsibility of the CBI is to make the country corruption free,” he said.
“Corruption is not just a small crime. It snatches the rights of the poor and that leads to the birth of many criminals,” Modi said.
The government, he said, had started started action against black money and benami property on mission mode. “Besides the corrupt, we are also fighting the causes of corruption,” the PM said.
Lauding the role of CBI in solving cases, PM Modi said, “even today, when a case remains unsolved, there are demands it should be handed over to the CBI.”
The Prime Minister said that in the last six decades, the CBI has earned recognition as a ‘Multi-dimensional’ and ‘Multi-disciplinary’ investigation agency.
Training his guns at the previous governments at the Centre, the Prime Minister said that that corrupt practices had ruined the basis of our economy and banking system in the period before 2014.
He said those who benefitted from corruption for decades have created an ecosystem which attacks the probe agencies. But the agencies should not to be deterred by stories about power of the corrupt and their ecosystem to tarnish them.
“These people will keep distracting you, but you have to focus on your work. No corrupt person should be spared. There should be no laxity in our efforts. This is the wish of the country, this is the wish of the people of the country. The country, law and constitution are with you,” the Prime Minister said.
“Today there is no dearth of political will to take action against corruption in the country,” Modi said and asked officers to take action against the corrupt, however powerful, without any hesitation.
“I know that the people against whom you are taking action are very powerful, they have been part of the government and system for years. Even today they are in power in some states, but you (CBI) have to focus on your work, no corrupt person should be spared,” the PM added.
Different parties from time to time have often accused the CBI of working at the behest of the government of the day by targeting the opposition leaders.
The Supreme Court had in 2013 denounced the agency as “a caged parrot” and “its master’s voice”.
The harsh criticism from the judge came after the top court noted clear evidence of interference in CBI’s inquiry into alleged irregularities in the allocation of coalfield licences to private companies.
The CBI was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India dated April 1, 1963.
