DEHRADUN: The higher reaches in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand received a fresh spell of snowfall while the foothills and low-lying areas witnessed rain on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, according to the regional meteorological centre.
Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri were lashed by snowfall all night while the lower areas, including subsidence-hit Joshimath, received rain. State capital Dehradun too experienced rainfall throughout the night.
Bikram Singh, director of the regional meteorological centre, said, “The Char Dham towns and surrounding areas received at least half to one foot of snowfall on the night of March 25. Surkanda near Mussoorie also received light snowfall. The majority of remaining places, especially in the Garhwal region, received rainfall.”
Pratapnagar area in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district received a maximum of 40 mm of rainfall, followed by Dehradun which recorded 30 mm of rain, while Dhanaulti recorded 20 mm of rainfall, according to the data shared by the met centre.
Thunderstorms occurred in many places with hail storms reported at isolated places, including Ranichauri, Chakrata, Tehri, and Sahastradhara in Dehradun.
As a result, the temperatures have dropped across the state. In Dehradun, the maximum temperature was recorded at 27.2 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. The maximum temperature in Tehri plunged to 18 degrees Celsius, almost five notches below the normal level.
Meanwhile, dry weather is likely to prevail across Uttarakhand for the next few days before another spell of rain and thunderstorm hits the Himalayan state on March 30. “A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from the night of March 29. Uttarakhand, particularly, will witness rain on April 1 and 2,” said Singh.
