Shah underlined how a target to destroy 75,000 kgs of narcotics during the 75-day campaign had exceeded manifold with around 5,94,620 kgs of drugs worth Rs 8,409 crore having been destroyed till now. Of this, 1,29,363 kgs of narcotics worth around Rs 3,138 crore have been destroyed by NCB alone, he said.
He said 1,257 cases were registered between 2006 and 2013, which increased by 152% to 3,172 between 2014-2022. The total number of arrests during the same period increased by 260% to 4,888 from 1,362, he added.
“Similarly, during 2006-2013, 1.5 lakh kg of drugs were seized which doubled to 3.3 lakh kg between 2014-2022, drugs worth Rs 768 crore were seized during 2006 and 2013, which increased by 25 times to Rs 20,000 crore between 2014-2022,” he said. Shah said the Modi government was carrying out the battle against drugs on four main pillars — detection of drugs, destruction of the networks, detention of culprits and rehabilitation of drug addicts.
“The MHA has adopted a three-pronged approach to crackdown on narcotics which includes strengthening institutional structures, empowerment of all agencies related to control of narcotics and strengthening the coordination among them and launching an awareness campaign,” he said.
He also said the problem of drug trafficking was not confined to a state or the Centre alone, but that it was a national problem and efforts to deal with it should be unified. He also stressed on the need to organise district-level and state-level ‘N-CORD’ meetings regularly.
