After lodging a protest with the US and the UK over vandalism of Indian missions, India also summoned the Canadian high commissioner Cameron MacKay to protest strongly against activities of the Khalistan supporters in Canada that saw them breaching the security of the Indian diplomatic mission and consulates last week. The foreign ministry sought an explanation from the high commissioner how the pro-Khalistan supporters were allowed to do this even in the presence of police. India summoned the envoy shortly after hundreds of Khalistan supporters gathered outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver against what they called illegal crackdown on Sikhs by Indian authorities.
“The high commissioner of Canada was summoned yesterday to convey our strong concern about the actions of separatist and extremist elements against our diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week,” said the MEA. Canada was reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention, and asked to arrest and prosecute the individuals who have already been identified as being involved in such acts, added the ministry. The government further said it expected the Canadian government to take all steps required to ensure the safety of India’s diplomats and security of its diplomatic premises so that they are able to fulfil their normal diplomatic functions.
According to reports from Canada, on Sunday last, an event that was to be attended by the Indian high commissioner to Canada in the British Columbia province had to be cancelled following a violent protest by Khalistan supporters. The event was organised at the Taj Park Convention Centre Surrey to welcome Indian envoy Sanjay Kumar Verma on his first visit to the west coast of the country. An Indian-origin journalist was also assaulted by protesters.
